Subject: RE: JD 348 knot issues

SW Ohio
Those sometimes yes, sometimes no problems are harder to figure out, I would start with at least 170# knot string, I got by with 130 plastic for a long time but trying to make a tight heavy bale would always cause problems with string. A few thoughts......could be your twine disc tension is TOO tight, needles have to be pretty darn close to where they are supposed to be, then set tucker fingers to them, tuckers should move freely with some slop but all springs should be in place (one thing to check is the shaft that tucker operator comes from, I had one that the shaft was broken loose at pivots), Is this an old ball of twine, could be pulling out of ball all funny, If one side of the knot is coming out like in your pictures then you are likely trying to make the bales too tight, loosen up the tension or back off the air, other symptoms of this are-rusty high friction chamber, twine pulls too hard out of box, hay dogs not working, spongy hay, dull twine knife, etc.
Read through the book carefully and see that most everything is doing what it is supposed to do, at the right time, I rebuilt a 347 and did not fiddle with the knotters again in over 100k bales.
