| I think I would start by checking the needle eyes for wear... and check the twine tension. It seems excessive. I'd also check the function of the twine fingers and make sure they're moving their full sweep and are not sloppy loose.. Also make SURE the hay dogs are all falling into place on each plunger stroke. Broken spring coule be a problem there. Could also be that he plunger stroke is not full.... ie the wrist pin or crank bearing is bad so it doesn't get the last bit of travel it needs to get past the hay dogs. Had that happen... It makes a mess a lot like you have.
I'm most concerned about that frayed twine tho... quite possibly a worn out needle eye (causing the twine to catch) or too much tension.
