The ditches are full. The land is fairly flat (not rolling hills) so the water sits in these low spots until the water table is lowered as the ditch and river goes down. Before it was pattern tiled, the land would dry as the water table went down, but now it usually happens faster if we have normal rainfall. When you get 5-6 or even 10-12 inches of rain, there is just no way the water can get away fast enough even if you had a ditch straight to the Mississippi River.
