Look at it like this..........your starter needs 12 volts to crank the engine. It may need a lot of amps when the tractor is cold, oil is thick etc, but when weather is warm, tractor has just been running etc, it needs less amps to turn it over.............BUT it still has to have 12 volts to operate the solenoid and make the starter spin.

So, when you install two 12 volt batteries, either one by itself will deliver 12 volts to make the starter solenoid engage the starter drive and send power to the starter motor. If you need a bunch of amps because of cold engine etc, you have to have both batteries contibuting AMPS, but at times, you can get along fine with one. This means you may never notice if one battery gets some corrosion on a post, the ground to one gets loose etc. Your tractor will keep starting just like normal on the one effective battery. This is partly good and partly bad......Mostly good in my opinion. The bad part is that you can have a battery with corroded terminals or loose connections that doesn't get charged (and also doesn't contribute amps for cranking) and it can be damaged by chronic undercharging. I would say this is sort of rare, usually the small charging amperage will make it through a poor connection that will not work at all with the high amperage starting draw. So, you have a battery that is just along for the ride until you clean the cables on some sort of maintenance schedule or notice the one battery isn't doing the job and investigate what's wrong with the tractor.

If you install two 6 volt batteries BOTH of them are required to be good, and have good connections to deliver 12 volts to make the starter operate. Your tractor will not crank with any problem in either battery or the cables. You will immediately know about the problem and must find it and correct it before you will get the engine to start. This is partly good and partly bad. Mainly bad in my opinion.
