Old surface drains before it was tiled? Those were dug deeper by oxen 110+ years ago, then dredged with hi-tech machines in the 19teen's.
I'm sure it was a slow go before, as it was all muskrat huts, fish and ducks that lived there before some Scandinavian & German folks dug a ditch and put tile in afterwards.
