The self glue won't do the job on wall or ceiling by my experience.

No it will not. Not even adequate for the floor IMO. If I was determined to use them I'd put some regular flooring glue on them. Still not sure it would be enough for a wall or ceiling application. I'm sure there is some glue that would work but I'm sure it would also be hard to work with.
Peel and stick vinyl floor squares?
