How you view Ford versus GM and tax dollars is really based more on emotion than fact.
The fact is, without tax dollars Ford would have gone under the same as GM (and Chrysler sold itself to avoid the ditch)
So Ford "borrowed" the money (smart CEO)
And GM had to be "bailed out" (dumb CEO)
As a member of GM management who walked away from GM after 16 years - and told the BoD/CEO they didn't know what they were doing - I could go into a long diatribe about who did what, but I won't bore you with it.

We (as a country) are no longer exceptional. We are no better than the Greeks, or Portugal, or Spain. It is just that we have a vastly bigger economy so we can roll the debt over and play games with it.
The bottom line is we are as a country:
1. Broke
and
2. A Deadbeat who is not paying his bills.

The fat lady is gonna really squeal when it implodes.
