SE IA | Tom,
Thanks for response. I am not a big supporter of any checkoff because it is a tax. Taxes are inevitable in life so I understand that I have to pay it. I wish it could be improved.
My opinion is that the only thing the checkoff should do is work to be a voice for agriculture. You don't need to do product research, we have universities that do that. Product companies provide the necessary research for their products that improve yield. We need checkoff to help stand next to farmer against the EPA regulations, against unfair fertilizer manufacturers price manipulations, and be a proponent of agriculture. We as farmers do a poor job of telling our story because we don't have a big voice, this is one place you could do it for us.
My last point is the peeve I have with the meat checkoffs. When pork ran their slogan as "the other white meat" it merely was aimed to take demand away from chicken. And "beef, its what's for dinner" pretty much trying to steal the meat show. How can farmers get anywhere if we can't even agree with ourselves? The mudslinging pi$$es me off to steal market share. Why not eat all? The target of the slogan for any checkoff should be to get consumers to eat more and understand the benefits of then protein products we raise, not pull demand from other sectors. | |
