deep SW On. | I know nothing of cow-calf economics other than it is a long time from keeping a heifer too having a saleable calf-feeder and a few must die or abort also.......What I do know is most hog guys that have quit and decided to cash crop have no intentions of ever returning too livestock business....all meats are quite profitable now but for new guys too start up it takes a lot of $$ and in cows or sows (F-F) you have a yr. of bills with no income ,soys can be planted and in 4 months harvested and have your cash...........for a long time I expected 1 sow F-F to return as much in profit as 10 acres of rented land .......so if you can make $400 a head on cows you still need 150 or so for a comfortable standard of living , some older cattle guys were satisfied making $50 on feeding steers ,now that is a tight margin..........Garvo mentioned costs today and be it land or livestock its pretty crazy , quota alone here to milk 200 cows would run you $6 mil. for the piece of paper before you even buy work books or anything else | |
