Applying herbicide a week before tillage will help prevent issues arising from the root mass.

Rye also has an alleopathic effect. The more time microbes have to break down the compounds prior to planting, the better.


I have heard this for years, but have also heard the alleopathy only effects small seeded crops.



In the case of corn following rye, the "allelopathic" is more nutrient deficiency. Spreading 100-150 lbs AMS close to corn planting will eliminate the effect.
