southern MN | Boy.... There is about 200 acres, with a 8 inch, 10 inch, and 15 inch pulling from it. They mostly parallel each other, we interconnected them to get the flow right. The 8 inch was put in in the 50s when the goal was just to drain down the couple bad spots - you know how it is.
The 6-10 inch mains drain maybe 20-40 acres each.
The 6 inch in this message is probably only draining 10 acres, not as far back as you see, a tad more to the right.
I rarely ever see the outlets when they are running, the ditch gets too high. That is kinda why this is interesting to me, with the ditch cleaning in able to see a bit more of the output. Its new to me too.
Most have open intake or 2, I presume the tile runs fuller when those are working, at this time only the one is flowing, and that is less than a full flow.
It is rare to ever see the tile stop running, even if it gets dry they still dribble out water from the clay, maybe only 1 in 10 years on average do they all stop running any time there isn't snow on the ground. The ditch has only dried up 2x in my life, and last fall it got to a bare trickle.
Yea 88 was a dry year up here, I got 20bu yield on one field of corn. Dad said far far worse than the 30s around here. Actually the last 3 falls have been very very dry, we keep getting these heavy spring rains to 'average' it out..... 88 we got nothing, 87 was dry to set it up.
I really appreciate the stories and pictures of the river flooding a couple years ago, the drought some of you are going through, the steep hills of the northern west, and how issues and problems are dealt with. And how I assume this or that, an would so totally fail with my silly thoughts in those conditions!
We had a mist start just after I took those pictures today, it developed into a heavy mist you needed the wipers on this evening, wonder if it was a 1/10 of an inch, but the ground is wetter, puddles are deeper in the fields from that little bit, when it is so saturated.
Hope we all get a good crop in and make it to a good harvest.
