Some power supplies get along with battery maintenance, many do not. Many an Astron has been on the dumb side. A deep cycle battery needs to float about 13.8 volts while a starting battery needs to float at 14.2 volts, else if lower they aren't fully charged and if floated higher they are over charged and constantly need water. When running my radios on battery while sitting on a hill top for microwave activity or camping, I use an automatic battery charger to keep the battery up. Some radios do notice hum from the charger if its older and crude and I've heard that from big campers sitting in a RV park. A plain power supply may also load the battery when the power supply doesn't have power and that's counter productive. The ideal power supply or charger would have a series diode to the battery to prevent that, though a relay powered by the AC line could do that without the voltage drop of the diode.
