Subject: Chart for seed population vs. yield potential?

Southeast SD
Does anyone know if there is a chart or way to determine what a person should plant for population of corn and soys to determine a potential yield goal? Just assuming ideal conditions. We farm south central SD and ground is very sandy and plant an avg of 19,000 on corn for instance and in our area 100 bushel corn is pretty decent, however last year and 2 years before that we had good rains, and both years thought we might break that 100 bushel mark but ended up sitting right at 96 and 98. I just got to thinking to myself maybe we are limited by the population we are planting? Maybe not but was wondering if there is a chart or a guidline to determine what you should plant for population for a desired yield goal? Hopefully someone knows what I'm trying to say :)

Thanks guys.

Chris
