nw MN | Here is how it was explained to me:
Corn seedlings can grow surprisingly large using just the endosperm of the seed as a nutrient source, but probably won't get long enough roots by the time it runs out to reach a 2x2 application of fertilizer. The popup application right with the seed acts as a transitional nutrient to keep the seedling in a high nutrient environment all the way until it can develop a root system large enough to began tapping soil fertility and reach your 2x2 band. You might not be able to see a measureable yield bump every year from it but you will see healthier 2-3 leaf corn.
Maybe you "go the extra mile" on popup and don't see any measurable benefit, but you add up all the things over the year that you "go the extra mile" on to make a healthier plant pretty soon it really adds up. | |
