southern MN | I have cattle, and a network of strategic field roads that are grassy, bit of alfalfa in them, and I keep the spring traffic on them to a minimum. In a wet fall the sod carries trucks and wagons a lot better than my clay soil in end rows. I guess I use those more than I realize for turning and parking and so am pretty minimal on actual end rows. The coop sprayer and fertilizer guys seem quite happy with the field roads.....
Dad used to run 8 end rows with 4 row wide planting equipment.
I bumped that up to 12 rows a lot of places as the combine I had was tight on 8 rows.
Now go 12 or 18 end rows with a 6 row narrow planter. My 6 row combine turns around just fine in 12 end rows - the sprayer its nicer to have 18 - but again, I probably am hanging the snouts over the neighbors end rows or my field roads... Planter turns easy in 12.
One field that was longer than normal I started putting 24 rows on each end, as I could barely make it through on a hopper full, anything to shorten the rows a bit.
No right or wrong on this, just interesting reading on a stormy morning.
