48 with a 12 row.
Did 24 for years.
Then my brother picked some of my corn one year, with a 8 row.
Said it was fine thru the field, but not at the ends. You need more room to turn.
I am confused. Are you saying that a combine with an 8 row head needed more than 24 end rows to turn around? Do you not slow down for the turns?
I'm using a 12 row planter with autosteer, turning around just fine on 24 end rows. I'm not sure why you need more than that.
ETA: in my case, Dad would chew me out if I tried planting 48 end rows. "What for do ya want the headland traffic way out in the middle of the field!?!" "Keep it on the ends, don't pack down the whole field!!!"
