Subject: What to do with slow growinf rye?

s.w. Wi.
Have a friend with a field of rye (cereal) that he was planning to let grow to use as forage for cows. The long cold wet spring has left him with not much forage. He was planning on turning it under and then planting alfalfa ,after it was grazed, but is wondering if he should just run his drill through and try to get the alfalfa started, since it now May and the rye is only an inch high.
Anyone think that overseeding alfalfa with the drill is a good idea?
