King City, Mo
This is another reason to have Phil Needham's wheat book.....

http://www.needhamag.com/

Last year I gave my wheat a boost by applying N right around boot stage.

Too much N early and the wheat lodges, then hit it with more N at boot seemed to work good. I used nitrate and ams and spun it on dry via the tractor and fertilizer cart. I had n on in the fall, at green up and at boot. Total 120# N, pushed the wheat hard enough that a K deficiency showed up.

So when you push one thing to the max you then have to find the next factor that is limiting yield. I had 87 bu wheat around the house and no fungicide sprayed on.

The wheat this year got planted too late and even 140# of N and an aggressive balance of other nutrients hasn't made the bad stuff look like good wheat. So corn is going to get planted where I tried the extra N, and a cover on the field where I can graze. None of the fields around here are going to be bin busters.
