Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | Very good post. Exactly the same things I've seen. We went continuous no-till more than 20 years ago and have done some no-till planting for more than 30 years. One of the main reasons was as you stated, the use of less equipment and labor. Also, for us, moisture retention is always a concern.
In the last 5-6 years I have gone back to some vertical tillage in some situations. I call it prescription tillage. I don't do tillage unless I think there is going to be a return to do so or a good reason for it. We don't do all the acres. We don't necessarily do the same thing every year.
I think your right about the next leg up in yields being the understanding of microbial activity. |
