east central MO | We did trials for 5 years in a row. We have a silt loam soil over top of a clay hardpan. Most of our soils average about 6" of topsoil. The only conclusion we came to is that we are planting too much seed. We broke it down from 190000 to a low of 125000. We broke it out in 4 populations and even broke the fields down from highest yielding parts to the lowest yielding parts (all clay). We would plant 4 different rates in 15" rows on each zone. Even in the clay the lower population always did as good as the highest rate. In conclusion we determined it didn't matter how much topsoil we were dealing with, there was no difference in yield whether we planted 190 or 125 thousand. There was never any type of data that showed a yield response to variable rating. | |
