Subject: RE: 30inch beans in the north

SE ND
I'm talking from a few bushels loss to a total disaster which I saw last year when I compared my 30's to 15's in a hot dry year. In July and August you do not get the cooling and moisture preserving effect a canopy helps with which can really hurt beans. If they canopy and you have adequate moisture it probably won't be a big deal. I think there are probably many years where 30's will yield like 10s and 15s. However I believe that a 10 year comparison in a wide variety of conditions would put narrow rows; this seems to be what the university research suggests.

Variety selection is also critical if you have high ph ground etc.

EDIT: Alot of southern guys are right when saying there is no difference. The effect is multiplied when you move north and on soils with increased variability.
