Southeast MO | You got close at the end. Using left over milo, soybeans, etc. is a great idea. I use cover crops in our system in southeast mo. We drill rye behind corn in the fall w/oilseed radish or turnips. We graze that with 350-450 calves. In fact we are still grazing as we speak. I bring that up, because you need to pencil that $30/acre. I am "rotating" 300 head of weaned calves on approx. 100 acres of rye. Gains last year avg. around 2.2lbs/day with a commodity blend at 4-5lbs/day and the rye. I will kill it around May15 and plant soybeans. My point is that my cost of gain is next to nothing. I spent close to $35/acre last fall to seed but the benefits are far beyond. It also allows my grass to rest until late May.
Keep the mixes simple in the beginning!! Try a few more on their own before getting to complex. Where are you located? | |
