Matt, the top soil is a little dry but not bad. I think when the soil temps exceed the air temps during the after noon hours indicate that.
I think one of the reasons why the soil temperature is lower than air temps in the overnight to early morning hours is there is still frost in the ground. As i understand wind speed and sky conditions also play a role.
