Subject: RE: No tilling in the north

NW Minnesota

You are further south than I am but I've watched the neighboring dairy farmer attempts at no till the last few years.  The last couple of springs have been far from ideal, wet, late and cold.  No till beans planted into standing corn stalks didn't get planted until june since the corn ground would not dry out.  Our beans were planted on fall chisel plowed/spring cultivated wheat ground about the 15th of May.  Our beans ran a tick over 40 bushels, (40-45 is a pretty decent northern MN soybean crop) if their's made 15 i'd be surprised.  Year before almost a repeat.  In a "normal" spring no tilling into wheat stubble or bean stubble I can see working fine but not into corn stalks.  I think the ground is just too cold and usually wet "here".  Since I don't remember what a "normal" spring even is anymore cold, wet & late seem to be the new "normal".
