Subject: Closing wheels

Martinsville, Ohio

Closing wheels!  I got so frustrated waiting to notill in 1995 I posted my frustration on Crop Scouting, AgOnline.

A farmer in Iowa replied, take that coulter off, it is slabbing your soil.

Sure enough he was right but the double disk openers wore out in no time!  They were doing all the tillage.  Then he recommended I take the small Martin row cleaner wheels and run them in reverse for closing wheels!  What, are you crazy?  Voila, they worked!

I am not saying you or anyone should do that but that is what worked for me.  The Martin Till system is the best one I've ever tried on these plowed to death, eroded southwest Ohio soils.

Cover crops might be changing that, still learning.  Those peas will wrap up in many systems.

I have read about all of the different closing wheels we have all tried here on Crop Talk.

There is no perfect system, just the one we try to use that day.

I really admire your cover crops, John, they are awesome.

I hope you figure out what works best for you.  Your post reminded of what I have went through to try and close a good Vee trench.
