I have taken soil temps for many years.  The old suggestion was 7 A M, 4 " down, 3 mornings in a row.  No one would do that now.  I finally decided, if the ground is dry enough, it is usually warm enough.

We have seen good temps,  55 degrees 4 " down, and a cold rain take  20 degrees off the temp overnight.
