Yes, some of that early surveying was unbelievably accurate. My Dad always talked in terms of rods which I found difficult to relate to. I don't believe he ever used the term chains and certainly not furlongs.

I remember when I was back in 8th grade (a long time ago) that the Math teacher had some posters in her classroom showing how some of the old units of measure were first defined. I believe a a yard was the distance from the Kings nose to his out stretched forefinger.
