Subject: RE: Steering for tracked tractors

Manitoba, Canada
A quad is set up exactly like a wheeled tractor except there are track assemblies where the wheels would be. On a two tracked machine both tracks are always powered. The speed ratio between the tracks is changed. The further the steering wheel is turned the bigger the difference in speed between the tracks. When sitting still turning the steering wheel will make the tracks go in opposite directions. I have never tried it but probably at very low speed one track might be able to be made to go backward as well if the steering wheel is turned far enough. I don't know how it works but i would suspect the pulling power is probably through a differential of some sort and the ratio between them is adjusted by turning some component with a hydraulic motor. That is only a guess though. I really don't know.
