Subject: RE: Flats yield a little more?

From what I've heard and researched, the flats have a better emergence percentage resulting in more ears per acre. Rounds typically, not always, come from the butt end of the ear where there is more handling damage than the flats in the middle of the ear causing a very small decrease in emergence. This is all I can come up with of seeing a yield difference.

Also, as a general rule the germ on rounds is more exposed and vulnerable to damage during handing and processing at the seed plant. The "edges" on flats tend to protect the germ from taking a direct hit most of the time when the seed is flowing through various stages of shelling and processing.
