...but people farming it can lose 40 - 50 - 60% of their value ie corn prices 2012 vs today. Stock market has averaged your best rate of return for long term wealth accumulation over the last 100 years @ 9.3% gain per year.
Will it have highs and lows in between? yes
Could it go to zero? Yes, but you would have other problems if it does.
