Subject: RE: Tough Winter for fall seeded crops

Central Missouri
Annual ryegrass seeded sept 10 with drill behind corn has about 30% stand left. Annual ryegrass seeded sept 15 has about 5% left everything after is dead. It has been a very harsh winter on cc's. Once you get a 6" rain event like we did a week and a half ago you want everything covered. Here are a couple of pics of a mix I put together 2# rape, 1# radish, 6# spring oats, 1# purple top turnip, and 6# annual ryegrass. I intended for everything to winterkill except the annual ryegrass and rape. The rape I took out when I sprayed the winter annual weeds. First pic is after first freeze, second pic is in Feb where you can barely see a little annual ryegrass. I'm trying to accomplish 3 things with the mix into corn stalks 1. feed the biology and earthworms more narrow c:n ratio food through the winter, 2. prevent as much erosion as possible, and drive root channels deep with the annual ryegrass. The annual ryegrass once killed in the spring will give the biology and earthworms another narrow c:n ratio food source.

Last pic is 25# of cereal rye seeded after d/c beans at 25# per acre. It looks better in the field than in the pic. It emerged this spring.
