Subject: RE: Spent carbon uses?

SW IN
Location: SWIN. The activated carbon product we are using is called NUCHAR SA-20 made by MeadWestvaco. https://www.meadwestvaco.com/mwv/groups/content/.../mwv039306.pdf

It is a food grade powder. We use about 90,000 lbs / month. We are filtering a starch product. Mainly filtering color (protein) and odor. The spent carbon turns out to be 25-30% protein and contains a lot of diatomaceous earth. I can see issues with the diatomaceous earth good and bad regarding insects and possibly earthworms. The other issue is that the spent carbon is about pH 4.0 to 4.5.
