Canary grass will hold good but it also stops a lot of silt. When I was a kid we had a drainage ditch that we blasted out with ditching dynamite every few years. That was before track hoes were common. We would lay the dymamite sticks flat about a foot apart and set them off. It would make a ditch about 3 foot deep and 5 feet wide with no piles to spread out. Most waterways are seeded with brome around here because it lets the water flow and soesn't stop as much silt.
