Subject: What to do about underground gas line may come through my farm

SE PA
Due to the success of the Marcellus Shale in northern PA they are proposing a 42 inch buried gas line that comes south through my farm. At this point they say the proposed route is not set in stone but some have said they'll put it where they want. Some of my neighbors are eagerly waiting to hear how much they'll get paid to have this run through their properties and other neighbors are protesting against it. On my farm, the proposed line runs only through fields. We were told via a letter from the gas company that they will visit us soon. Does anyone have any advise/experience in dealing with this? how much do they pay? One lump sum or over a few years? What are pitfalls to avoid? I just want to be prepared when the gas company comes knocking!
