You might be able to get by if you shred in the fall, but row stalkers work best on the ridge. I am having a heck of a time with the stuff I shredded this spring. Running the stalk chopper over it on the ridge and leaving lots of trash, like you are seeing. Decided to disk some of my acres instead of screwing around with the chopper. Stuff that was fall shredded seems to be better.

I am in the same boat as you... I don't want to ridge under pivots, but I don't want to disk twice a year, and I can't afford a vertical till machine. Looking at strip till, but those machines aren't cheap either. No tilling into all of that residue looks like a nightmare, but might have to try it.
