It depends on a lot of things. Parallel will help a lot. I'm in west central Iowa where they help a lot until they blow out and then they are worse than nothing at all until you get them fixed. If they blow out all the water gets chanelled to one place and you get a huge gully. We have lots of gophers and badgers which contribute to the problem with their burrows. The three times in my life I have had terraces put in by the gov't design I have regretted it. But in your area it may be a lot different than here. I still think I would do as one other poster said and try grass waterways first. My brother in law runs a custom sprayer in eastern Nebraska and he likes the fields that are planted mostly up and down the hill and not on the contour. Each row carries it's own water instead of the water finding the low spot to run down the hill and cutting a ditch.
