Chilliwack BC Canada | We were advised by our new nutritionist to limit the amount of grass silage we feed. Silage is high in lactic acid and they are finding it has a negative effect on the heifers ligaments in there ankles. He said to feed a high hay diet as hay has less or no lactic acid. Hay also fills them up quicker cuz if they arent full they eat more than teenagers.
With dairy heifers you want them to grow in stature and not get fat. Ideally they should be 51" tall at the withers and over 850 lbs by 13 months at which point they are big enough to be bred. | |
