They know every sand spot, alkali hole, and first spot to get flooded when we get a big rain. Lots of them have worked for the neighborhood well driller, so they know what farms have good water, and which farms are lucky to have 400 gpm pumps. They've all seen certain ground broken out and farmed, only to see it go back to meadow in the wet years.
When it comes to new things - twin rows, strip till, RTK, etc., I take what they say with a grain of salt. Also agree about the older guys fertilizing like the old days still, but some have come around.
When it comes to seeing the economic circle come back around, I take notes.
