Subject: Bringing sod back to crops

N Illinois (I39 & US 30)
Neighbor has a 10 acre field next to me that has not been cropped for about 20 years. I helped him seed it back then and assumed it was CRP. He said it wasn't and never has been. He asked if I wanted to help him bring it back into production. I said maybe, but it might not be pretty. The field is flat and black. My question is, should we burn it off, throw some roundup beans and hope for the best? or should we skip this crop year and prepare it for next year this summer/fall? Thanks for any ideas/experiences.
