west central wisconsin | We have had freemartin heifers cycle every 21 days, and we have had a couple get pregnant......so I assume technically, these are not freemartin? Some have their vulva in an odd location, some have fairly complete tracts, and some have just enough tract to reach the bladder. Most of our actual freemartins have big shoulders, and look more like a bull's front end and a heifer's back end. We are currently enjoying one in our freezer, and she is very tender with absolutely excellent steaks. As a dairy, we will do the blood test on an occasional heifer born twin to a bull if she is high genetics, but most often, we just keep them, and if they cycle, we breed them, and if they don't cycle, we put them in with our steers or bulls to be raised as beef. |
