Subject: RE: Old Dairy Barn to Shop Conversion

SE WI

I had planned on starting mine this winter, but I broke my collar bone.  It will probably happen this summer.  I have not found an engineer that was worth working with and some of the local lumber companies were a little help.  Trent at Nelson Lumber in Edgerton, WI was quite a bit of help, but I don't really want to go the truss route because I will lose too much height.

I am a pro soil sampler so I put quite a few miles on.  Here are some of the versions I have seen in my travels.  Oddly most of these are within an hour of home.

These are all hosted on Photobucket.  If you want more pictures of one of the barns click this link. http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/sflem849/library/Barn%20Pictures

This is probably how I am going to do mine.  I think it is a good compromise between price and labor.  All the barns that I have seen converted like this used construction adhesive and bolts to bolt the LVLs to the beams.  Just the major members will be $1200.

Belvidere - LVL

Avalon Rd - LVL

One of my barns is built like this and so is one a couple blocks away.  I think I could convert my barn to this type of structure, but you would be playing around 30' (?) in the air at the peak.  Just the main members are $700ish (I just tossed the paper with the math away last week so it may not be $700 but close)  For the extra labor (and doing construction way up there) I will spend the extra money and use LVLs.

Hwy 140

Pen Barn

This way is the most expensive.  IIRC it is around $3300.  This method WILL get an engineer stamp of approval if done through the lumber company.  This was mid build.  I think there are plywood gussets on both sides now.

Shoppe

Not sure if this one gets and engineer stamp, but is it very similar.  The trusses are about half as deep.

Collins

Edit - I should say that I have been in two that used I beams and posts to form a second shell inside the barn.  Both had I beams under the upper main post and round (8"?) posts down to the ground.  It was pretty simple and I don't plan on doing it like that so I didn't take pictures.  BUT if I do happen to get a couple house trailers given to me I may second guess that plan...
