Subject: RE: Old Dairy Barn to Shop Conversion

central - east central Minnesota -

Farmer8920 - 3/17/2014 03:18 Nice Photos! My barns have posts in the center of the hay loft and also posts down below that support the hay loft floor on each side of the gutters. What is the best way to support the roof and barn walls if I remove the hay loft floor and center posts? I might put a rollup door on the side of the barn also instead of the end since I will have more width to work with if needed.

Nice barns, nice pic's - thanks for sharing . . . . . . .

Now, for consideration - if you can do all the work yourself, you MAY save a few dollars, and come out slightly ahead of building new. If the barns have some sentimental value, then it May, make sense to convert them to shop/storage.

It's going to cost about as much to convert them (and still not have the same open floor plan as a pole shed/shop), as it would to construct a pole shed. The way those buildings are constructed isn't conducive to open floor concept. So, it takes a heap of material/labor (money) to re-structure them to work like a pole shed.

I guess, get some experienced contractors that have converted them and see what their pricing comes in at and compare to new construction.

Those buildings have more astatic's to them, then buildings of today . . .so, it'd be nice to salvage. It'll just cost more, as it would, to build something different, then the typical pole structure today.

Good luck
