The technical terms is that it breaks the laminar flow of the wind, which makes it lose energy and drops the suspended dirt particles on the downwind side of the clod that the chisel pulls up. If you have a feedyard close by w lumpy manure, it can do the same thing by spreading manure. Plus, hopefully the manure won't pulverize as easily as a clod.
