perryton, tx | Yes it's mainly lack of rain causing the problem. We're in the 3rd year of drought here; this all started in 2011 which was hotter and drier than any of the "dust bowl" years. Our soils are prone to blowing at any time so we rely on growing crops or crop residues to protect the soil-we just haven't been able to grow anything substantial enough to provide any protection. The chisel plow pulls up clods and creates furrows-think of driving your car over speed bumps, you have to slow way down and the chisel plow creates the same effect by slowing down the velocity of the wind across the soil surface. In addition, the furrows trap all the loose soil particles and keep them from getting lifted into the air.
