North End I-15 | Blew like that in the north Havre country back in the early 60s . I worked a farm/ranch that was on it's 3rd fence . (one on top of the other )
One of the neighbors had left a few shanks off the field cultivator last time over summer fallow . It grew rows of wonderful Russian thistle . February they blew over in to the ranches fences and flattened the steel post fence , popped the staples on the wood post fences . Broke a few of those wood ones off also .
I took a fork and pitched weeds in piles and burned . Pushed a wheel barrow with posts , wire ,spud bar and a 20lb maul for miles . The ole boy I worked for that winter could not afford the gas to drive jeep out fix'n fence . Tough years .
I had dropped out of college to pay medical bills for first born .
The good old days .
At least back then a man that wanted to work long and hard at crap jobs could find work . :>)
My take home pay was 186 .00 Per month . Rent was free , owner paid the heat bill . Heated the house with a stand alone heater in the living room . It was a 5 mile drive up to the main ranch house where he kept stove oil . I packed it home in 5 gallon pail .
We lived on the winter feed grounds and fed and calved out 200 head of Hereford cows . Feed wagon was pulled with a 48 Dodge Power Wagon . Stout rig. Chained up on all 4's it was one heck of a wagon puller.
Great memories .
Wife about went crazy by her self all day with just a baby for company . I would feed and head to the main ranch to milk 2 cows by hand and have it in the house by 7 AM
Then out fixing the fence till cow milking time then back to feed and check cows . Up every Morning at 4 am , feed and check cows , have breakfast and head to main ranch .
Looking back I guess welfare would have been so much easier . Too young and dumb to know there was an easier life :>) | |
