SWMN | there is nothing in the column that would make it lengthen or anything other than the hoses connected to it on the bottom maybe flexing and moving probally a worn out pivit system in the bottom that hold the whole column in. is this a early or late 30 series? unless its a very very late one i think id trade the autopilot in for a ez pilot.
Double and triple check all your connections and whatever you had to do hydrauilicly to connect this in. switch the right and left steer hoses and see if it will steer left but not right. usually these being a 2wd are a little aggressive when steering so you usually have to dumb them way down. Make sure everything else is correct like the nav orientation go to diag and see if its displaying fwd when your driving it forward. etc
