Those long skinny Packard and JD new generation batteries are not the world's greatest design. They have longer internal connections between cells and the resistance of those limits cranking amps, hot or cold. Other shapes accomplish shorter connections inside and give better cranking amps for the same ampere hour rating (a measure of plate area). And since they have limited applications they can tend to be slow movers and not so cared for in the stores when you can find them. I put a side terminal battery on my gas 4020 on my step/battery shelf and it works much better for a much lower cost.
