Hennepin, IL | I'd have to say it depends on the type of ground you're farming and tillage practices. Hydraulic downforce can pay big dividends on varying soil types and in no-till or strip-till applications. Row shutoffs are convenient but in reality they basically only save you the cost of the extra seed because you still have the option of taking out point rows the old fashioned way- with a cultivator. I understand that costs too, as well as some gained efficiency by not having to stop on endrows as stated before. My point being, it depends heavily on your operation.
Edit: Read your post again and I would think a 1/2 width disconnect would work for your planter only being an 8 row, that would get you down to 4 rows per section and would gain you the ability to shut off at headlands. The fact you have 3 bu boxes (depending on if you actually fill them full or not), I think you would see even more benefit from hydraulic downforce, or at least an automated downforce system.
