Subject: RE: SMS Basic Group Field(s) to ONeE Field

Ok,

I think I have the solution... Thanks to somebody very smart, unlike me, and was willing to share information. So, I believe that others might want to have this information. Here it goes.

1st all fields are created separately with a 4-wheeler and a GPS device.

2nd import all data into the computer... make a copy of this and set it aside for backup purposes.

3rd make a decision... Farm with 4 fields: 1) keep them with all 4 fields OR, 2) combine them into one.

Let's go with option number #2. Combine the 4 fields into one.

From the Management Tree
Select Farm (with the 4 fields)
Create New Map
File>New>Boundary Layer
(Now you are in the Boundary Edit-New Layer) Window
Edit>Copy From Layer
Next>Select All>Next>Copy Spatial Data>Finish
Set Field Boundary (bottom left on screen)
Select Grower
Select Farm
Select Field (you have to Add New)
Accept
File>Save
Select Grower
Select Farm
Select Field (should be the one you just added above)
Select Year (NO YEAR is what I used here)
Ok
Close (you are now done. close the Boundary Edit window)

Your Management Tree should have collapsed down to just the Grower level.

Expand the Grower, Farm and you you should have a new field listed in the farm you were working on.

If you want you can delete the 4 small fields now... or leave them and you will have 5 fields in this example.

Whew, that is a lot of steps... BUT, it works perfectly. If all fields are going to be planted the same, use the one large field. If not, you still have the ability to select each one individually as needed.

Yes, you might have some issues with AB lines and formulas for spraying etc. that will have to be copied over. But that isn't too tough.

Hope this helps somebody. I'm trying really hard to accommodate the Grower's requests here.

Dave
