Bourbon, Indiana | boy a lot of you sure do paint a bleak picture for some of us. ARound here it all boils down to (bigger must be better)! When older farmers retire it seems like they always want to big, fancy equipment farmer on their ground, they sure do talk a good talk when you mention you'd like a chance to farm their place when they decide to hang it up by saying we need to support our younger farmers, give them a chance at farming instead of going with the big boys all the time, but when it comes down to it they want the big boys out there. By the time you hear that so so is retiring the ground is already rented.
For me, it is a very scary future as I see it. I"m 36 and have been farming full time for 13 years and own 22 acres and dad let me use his equipment till we started to increase in acreage then bigger and newer equipment had to be bought to cover those acres, I own most of it now, all paid for, still a little debt but thats not all bad. I never never never would be where I"m at today without the help of my father and I think that goes for most farmers in my gen. age. But the future for me is very scary when you rent about all of your ground yourself, boys like me can't afford to pay $10,000 acre for ground, no way in harry does that work, so your at the mercy of your landlords and prospective landlords, at least for me I am.
scary future indeed with factory run farms all around ya. | |
